By late 2011, the Nord Stream pipeline will be carrying Siberian natural gas from Russia beneath the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project has been promoted all along the way by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. The Nabucco pipeline, on the other hand, is routed to bypass Russia, carrying gas to European markets through Turkey and the Balkans. Spokesman for Nabucco is Gerhard Schröder’s former vice-chancellor and foreign minister Joschka Fischer. Nord Stream and Nabucco are massive technological, financial and industrial projects, and both are locked in a duel to prove which is best and most profitable.
