Every year up to 1.5 million patients become infected with bacteria in German hospitals and up to 40,000 of them die, making this a far bigger cause of death than road accidents. Intensive-care patients from Germany are considered “high risk patients” by neighboring states. The causes of the hygienic disaster are very diverse: irresponsible use of antibiotics, slack work in clinics, cover-ups, ignorance and the lack of political will to change disastrous conditions. The fact that it doesn’t have to be this way has been demonstrated by countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark for decades.
