The numbers of computer viruses and trojans have soared in the past few years. Spying in and through the internet by organized crime syndicates has become a general threat targeting data that could be turned into money: corporate secrets, user profiles, or confidential bank details.
Direct internet attacks are also on the rise. The military, secret services and terrorist networks all launch cyberwar attacks on their adversaries. Internet security companies and military specialists are pitted against potential attackers in a cyberspace arms race. The battle for the internet has begun.
