The Israeli army set up its own science department back in the 1950s. Its purpose was to develop military technology to match that of its Arab neighbors. Today, Israel is one of the global players in the military hi-tech sector. The small country applies for six thousand patents a year. By comparison: the figure in the USA is only eight thousand. In the 1980s and 90s Israeli hi-tech start-ups guaranteed quality, innovation and a wealth of ideas, and it paid for international companies to invest in Israel.
