The world-renowned Ettal Abbey in Bavaria has been in a state of turmoil since allegations of widespread abuse of its wards were made public in late February. More than a hundred former pupils of the abbey’s boarding school say they were subjected to physical, sexual and emotional abuse. More and more people are speaking out, with cases reported not only from church-run schools but also from state-supported ones. In this report, victims describe their experiences and former priests explain how they turned into perpetrators. How did turning a blind eye become accepted practice?
