Almost one in eight women today are afflicted by breast cancer, and the risk increases with age. However, as a result of modern treatment methods the death rate has fallen significantly. A new method of intra-operative radiation treatment (IORT) – using targeted radiation beams during surgery - was recently introduced at Germany’s largest breast cancer clinic in Hamburg. Nowadays, treatment is focused on exact tumor diagnosis which, it is hoped, will secure even better survival rates.
