June 17, 2010, is the "World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought". It was initiated by the United Nations to call attention to a global challenge that has taken on truly forbidding dimensions: the rapidly spreading desertification and degradation of land in the Earth's dry zones. The problem has taken its place alongside climate change and extinction of species as the third acute environmental issue threatening our planet. This report examines the causes and effects of land desiccation and discusses what can be done about it.
