Kabul, seven years after the Taliban was toppled: The only safe havens for NATO forces are fortress-like camps with ramparts of barbed wire and concrete. Major General Hans-Erich Antoni, the highest-ranking German in the NATO command structure, is in charge of planning, supply and logistics. Qassim Khan is one of thousands of truck drivers who transport goods from Pakistan under contract from the alliance. But nearly every day, the convoys come under attack by Taliban fighters intent on disrupting the supply line. We accompany Qassim Khan on the dangerous journey from the Pakistani port city of Karachi through the dangerous tribal regions of Afghanistan to the capital, Kabul.
