Japan was still struggling to get the nuclear disaster at Fukushima under control, when the German government pulled a complete about-face on nuclear energy. Only a few months before the disaster, long-term contracts had been concluded for new German nuclear power plants. Then, almost overnight, Germany became the first big industrial nation to decide to give up atomic energy completely. The last nuclear power station in Germany is to be shut down by 2022. The great nuclear debate seems destined for the history books. Or is it? Does Germany really have no further involvement in nuclear power?
