Bolivia is by far the poorest country in South America. It also has the highest percentage of indigenous peoples, one of whom is President Evo Morales, a former coca farmer and union leader. He has promised to champion human rights, social change and redistribution of wealth. But resistance is growing to his brand of socialism. The comparatively wealthy citizens in the southern part of the country are demanding far-reaching autonomy. The political battle lines have been drawn: rich against poor, highlanders against valley dwellers, indigenous against white and mixed race mestizo. It appears more and more that a peaceful solution is out of the question.
