Germany's military presence in Afghanistan is seen as a dangerous deployment and an emotional struggle for soldiers and family members alike. The Bundeswehr came under attack 25 times in the first half of 2011 alone. Thirty-one soldiers were injured and seven were killed. Young recruits are often most profoundly affected by the violence, including Frank E. and Daniel K. After six months in Afghanistan they are struggling for their own physical and emotional survival. This feature report covers a year in their lives, from intensive training, through their deployment and finally their return home.
