The average German drinks almost 150 litres of coffee a year, that's more coffee than water or beer. Despite illegal price fixing by well-known roasters, a cup of home-brewed coffee often only costs five cents. On many plantations the workers can't lead decent lives on their wages. One example is Guatemala. This report highlights the connection between low coffee prices in the West and the exploitation of children, who toil away on the plantations of German roasters instead of going to school.
