Increasingly powerful drug cartels have been terrorizing Mexico with a bloodthirsty drug war for more than four years now. It has claimed well over 35,000 lives so far. The Mexican government's efforts to break the drug lords' power have been to no avail. Many police officers also work for the higher-paying cartels. Cocaine, heroin and marijuana now number among Mexico's leading export products. The drug trade with the United States brings as much as 40 billion euros annually into the Mexican economy. Now the cartels are even trying to bring Mexico's oil exports under their control.
