Fresh from German farms to our tables - that’s the image that Germany’s food industry tries to project. But in January, 2011, that image languishes under a cloud of consumer suspicion. Fatty acids intended for industrial production of livestock feed were found to be contaminated with dioxin. The resulting scandal is hurting farmers, retailers and consumers. This report picks up the trail of the dioxin and goes in search of the culprits. Farmers, feed inspectors, experts and, of course, consumers give their views. What might have been the causes for the contaminated feed? Can part of the blame be placed on consumers looking to pay rock-bottom prices for their groceries?
