Filmmaker Volker Barth combined scientific data gathering with 3D animation and was rewarded with hitherto unseen insights into the fascinating world of these mammals. Computer hackers from Berlin helped him in his mission to observe two whales diving to depths of up to 1,700 metres. How do sperm whales communicate in the pitch-black deep?
