Never before has a human eye been able to see how a sperm whale lives at a depth of more than 1,000 meters. Filmmaker Volker Barth combined scientific data gathering with 3D animation and was rewarded with hitherto unseen insights into the fascinating world of these mammals. Computer hackers from Berlin helped him in his mission to observe two whales diving to depths of up to 1,700 metres. How do sperm whales communicate in the pitch-black deep? What is the significance of their clicking sounds? Is oil drilling that uses extremely loud technology the cause for the tragic mass beachings of the whales?
