In the taiga of the Siberian far north lies the Yuzhno-Russkoye oil and gas field, one of the richest yet to be developed on Russian territory. The Russian natural gas giant Gazprom has already begun production from the field, estimated to contain enough cubic meters to supply Germany and two major German energy companies and stake-holders, BASF and E.ON, for the next 20 years. If all goes according to plan, gas from the Yuzhno-Russkoye field will start flowing through the Baltic "Nord Stream" pipeline to Germany in 2011.
