Dressed in a little striped shirt and clutching a big teddy bear in her arms, Leila Negra once sang duets with the famous Peter Alexander. She was small, delicate and had big, black eyes and very dark skin. That appealed to the German audiences of the 1950s. Leila is actually called Marie Nejar and was born in 1930 as the daughter of a sailor from what was then the Gold Coast. She grew up in Hamburg. This film portrays a woman who felt like a white person, but who experienced time and time again that people judged her by the color of her skin.
