"This will be the most important fridge in the world," a newspaper wrote when the Svalbard Global Seed Vault opened. Norway's government had three halls drilled into a mountain, cooled by eternal ice, to create a gigantic collection of plant seeds from all around the world. The seed bank was built to ensure that seeds will be available for agriculture even after global natural disasters. German researchers have also sent seed samples to Spitzbergen, to what's been dubbed the new Noah's Ark.
