Former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari is highly regarded as a seasoned diplomat in the international arena. He mediated in conflict situations on several continents over a period of nearly three decades. Among them was the 1999 Kosovo War; as the European Union envoy, Ahtisaari made a vital contribution to forging the peace plan of the G8 group of industrialized nations. He also played an essential role in ending the civil unrest in the Indonesian province of Aceh. For his accomplishments as a peace broker, 71-year-old Martti Ahtisaari received the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 2008.
