Rafik Hariri from Lebanon, the son of a farm worker, climbed the career ladder in Saudi Arabia. He returned to his home country with a fortune and was committed to the reconstruction of Beirut, the capital that had been devastated by civil war. He was the Lebanese prime minister several times. In 2004 he resigned: the relationship with Syria was extremely tense. In February 2005 he was killed in a bomb attack. Observers pointed their fingers at the Syrian secret service. The murder was followed by the "Cedar Revolution" and the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.
