Maria Hinojosa - Giving Voice to the Voiceless
In March of 2012, Maria Hinojosa gave the keynote speech at The Women's International Perspective's 3rd annual International Women's Day Symposium: Media as an Instrument of Change. Included on the panel were Dina Eastwood, Caroline Heldman, and Elisa Munoz. At this powerful event, Maria gave the speech Giving Voice to the Voiceless, where she takes on the mainstream media and argues that it fails to tell the stories that affect people's lives. She talks about the responsibility of journalists to make the world hear the voices of people who are too often silenced.
As the host of her own PBS show, One-on-One, Maria Hinojosa interviews all the movers and shakers, including politicians and prominent writers. But she also talks to the moved and shaken -- the people whose lives and stories are buried under the headlines.
Stories about immigration and women may not be TV ratings winners -- but they deserve to be told. And that's exactly what The WIP and Maria Hinojosa do.
