Open Book is a show about books, focusing on a single spot on Earth in each episode to introduce you to the writers and other storytellers - musicians, actors, poets and more - whose work reminds us we're all connected through the stories we have to tell and the communities we inhabit. We visit Ft. Greene, Brooklyn, a neighborhood with a rich cultural heritage, to meet guests including former child soldier Ishmael Beah, award-winning novelist Jennifer Egan, legendary jazz musician Bill Lee, Walt Whitman-devotee Daryl Blaine Ford, creative genius Carl Hancock Rux, Def Jam poet Suheir Hammad, singer Nucomme, and star of stage and screen, actor Jeffrey Wright.

Open Book is a breath of fresh air in a literary room that’s been closed for centuries to some of the finest voices on the planet.  In the hands of Ina Howard, whom I know to be  intensely creative, committed, and fascinated by the stories of people who live so well this gift called Life, it will lift our spirits and embolden our hearts while stretching our minds and imaginations in ways that move us, ultimately, to celebrate our very human, earthly, selves. There are so many different kinds of us. Yes!
--Alice Walker

About Host Ina Howard-Parker

Ina Howard-Parker

Ina Howard-Parker is the founder and director of Represent Agency, a social justice communications firm that works with media makers to turn their work  -- including books, photojournalism and films -- into tools for social change. She has written for multiple publications about communications strategy, media influence, and journalistic sourcing trends, and her work has been anthologized by Project Censored as well as "Voices of Dissent: Critical Readings in American Politics." She is the editor of Pulitzer Prize-winner Alice Walker’s New York Times bestseller, "We Are The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For: Inner Light in a Time of Darkness," as well as the forthcoming "10 Excellent Reasons to Think Twice About Meat," by popular musician Moby. Ina created Open Book to bring writers and artists to new audiences, and, through their work, to show how we are all interconnected through the stories we tell and the communities we inhabit.
