Banning Eyre interviews Omar Faruk Tekbilek who talks about the relationship between musical and spiritual practice. He sings a Sufi song, accompanying himself on the baglama, and demonstrates the ney (flute) and the ear-splitting zurna.
Omar Faruk Tekbilek was born in Adana Turkey and found solace as a prodigy of music at the age of eight. He also studied for the Sufi priesthood, seeing no difference between the state induced by music and the pursuit of the spiritual. He was nominated as Best Middle Eastern Music artist by the BBC in 2003.
