Sinesipho: Why Must I Die?
This film follows the story of Sinesipho, a young South African girl living with AIDS, who was on the cover of the first annual report of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. She symbolized the hope and commitment that vast amounts of money would finally flow to poor countries for the provision of medicine and care in the fight against AIDS.
Busi Maqungo is an HIV+ mother of two boys living in a shack settlement outside Cape Town in South Africa. Nothing much has changed in the four years since the photograph was taken, and she would like to know why. Can we trust the institutions that seemingly failed the very person embodying their existence? Should we trust governments that boast to end poverty‚ when their failure to address the epidemic has resulted in millions dying and ever more infections? Guided by Busi's experience and interrogations this film journeys to find Sinesipho, to see whether the world made good on their promise.
