In 2005 actor and singer Harry Belafonte founded The Gathering for Justice, an organization dedicated to helping stop the crisis of youth incarceration in the United States. Since its foundation the organization has held six youth and elder gatherings across the nation, and last November it conducted its first convention: The National Gathering for Justice, in Oakland, California.
In this Link TV special, host Brenda Wade presents Belafonte’s convention address. In this special speech, Belafonte recalls a conversation he had with Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement, when King told him he believed they were integrating into a “burning house” and that one day they would have to become firemen. Belafonte believes that this time has come.
