Special: Climate for Change - Part 2
The jury is in: severe global warming is a man made problem, which requires a mankind-made solution. But why has it taken so long? And who has been controlling the anti-science propaganda effort?
Alongside global warming, another environmental disaster is taking lives - when it comes to toxic spills and deadly industrial byproducts, the planet is not the only victim, so are the workers and citizens whose backyards and neighborhoods have become poisonous dumping grounds.
In this special Link TV presentation, journalist and author Mark Hertsgaard will be joined by Van Jones, Executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, to discuss the importance of independent media in fighting for truth on issues like global warming and toxic byproducts, while also looking at the powerful tactics of lobbyists and their government cronies and the urgent role ordinary citizens need to play in fighting this escalating disaster.
Clips from Blue Vinyl and Everything’s Cool will air as part of this special, giving a lighthearted edge to this serious issue, and will be followed by Bush’s Climate of Fear.
Everything’s Cool
This film follows the group struggle of some dedicated, sometimes a bit depressed, but always compassionate and passionate global-warming messengers. Their journey turns into a snapshot of what might very well become known as "those last years of U.S. global warming denial - that halcyon time when America finally 'got it' and then had about three minutes to join the rest of the globe in dealing with it." A film by Daniel Gold, Judith Helfand, Chris Pilaro and Adam Wolfensohn.
Blue Vinyl
With humor, hope and a piece of vinyl siding firmly in hand, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand and co-director Daniel B. Gold travel from Helfand’s hometown to America’s vinyl manufacturing capital and beyond in search of answers about the nature of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Her parents’ decision to “re-side” their house with this seemingly benign cure-all for many suburban homes turns into a toxic odyssey with twists and turns that most ordinary homeowners would never dare to take.
Bush’s Climate of Fear
In this incendiary program , the BBC’s Hilary Andersson reports on claims from a U.S. government whistleblower that scientific findings about global warming have been systematically changed and suppressed. Some scientists are afraid that what they see as a cover up will leave it too late for the U.S. to have any hope of controlling climate changes brought about by global warming.
