In the documentary you’re about to watch, evangelical leaders from James Robinson to Jerry Fallwell will tell you: they’ve found “the real deal” in George W. Bush.
During the second part of this special night, we air the second half of With God on our Side, which focuses in on the evangelical journey of George W. Bush, from "sinner, believer, to President." In it, evangelical leaders from James Robinson to Jerry Fallwell tell us why they’ve found “the real deal” in George W. Bush. Eschewing the polemic tone of most current political documentaries, With God on our Side relates its critical history of George W. Bush largely in evangelical conservatives' own words, including intimate interviews with religious broadcaster and former presidential candidate Pat Robertson; Ralph Reed, former Executive Director of the Christian Coalition; and conservative political strategist Paul Weyrich.
Tracing Bush from his Midland midlife crisis to the war in Iraq, the film opens a window onto how the President's beliefs and his relationship with the Religious Right inform his decisions as Commander-in Chief.
Commenting on the film is President of the Interfaith Alliance, the Reverend Dr. C. Welton Gaddy. Also shown throughout the evening are clips from the film God in Government, an exploration of the history of the separation of church and state in America . What are the consequences when religion and politics become intertwined? What are the fault lines along which tensions and conflicts occur? What is the appropriate relationship between "church and state" in a modern society?
