Midwife Suzanne Saunders-Blundell abandons her high-tech maternity unit in Britain to work in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia in West Africa. This is the third poorest country on Earth, where one in 12 women dies in childbirth. Suzanne, a fan of natural childbirth back in the UK, soon learns that there is little time for such luxuries at the Redemption Hospital. On her first day she has to deal with a traumatic stillbirth and during her stay a young woman she has helped to care for dies in front of her. Yet by the end of her stay Suzanne is amazed and inspired by the strength of the Liberian midwives she lives and works with, who in turn are keen to learn from her.

About The Toughest Place to Be...

This three-part series takes ordinary people with ordinary jobs, and asks them to clock on with the locals in places that are wildly different from those they are used to: a paramedic in Guatemala City, a bus driver in Manila and a midwife in Liberia, West Africa. Armed only with their skills, they live and work a 'normal' life with a mentor and see just what life is like in some of the most risky environments on Earth.

"[The] ultimate job swap series." - Guardian

"An entertaining slant on the travelogue." - Independent
