A Tribute to Ali Farka Toure
Category: Documentaries

This tribute to the legendary Malian singer/guitarist Ali Farka Toure features a short documentary about the making of his last - and perhaps greatest - album “Savane,” which was completed shortly before he died this past March. It also includes archival footage tracing his career, performances from his last filmed concert in Brussels, and a moving tribute from Ry Cooder.

Toure was considered one of the pioneers of “Mali Blues” and, during his career, won two Grammys for his work. Toure won his first Grammy for “Talking Timbuktu,” a collaboration with Ry Cooder, and his second for “In the Heart of the Moon,” a collaboration with another famous Malian musician, Toumani Diabate. In 2004, Toure was also elected mayor of his home town of Niafunke on the shores of the River Niger in northern Mali.
