The Trails from the East series opens with the "Reunification Express": The train journeys from Hanoi to Saigon on the so-called "Reunification Express". The travellers talk about coping with war, hate and forgiveness. Outside of the train, there is a portrait of singer My Linh, a star in Vietnam who now hopes to conquer the U.S. with her voice. On the shore, there is a meeting with a dive instructor, and in Tayninh there is a meeting with the Caodai Church, which preaches a mix of Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. The Caodai Church wants to unite the best of each religion. The journey ends in Saigon with a bus tour past former battlefields, with a stop at the Cu Chi battlefield, where tourists can shoot a machine gun for a dollar towards the Cambodian border.
