Archbishop Desmond Tutu joins World Affairs Council of Northern California CEO & President, Jane Wales, in a spirited conversation, recorded in April of 2008. He speaks candidly about his role as a cleric and an activist, including his most recent role as chairman of The Elders, a group of world leaders who contribute their wisdom, leadership and integrity to tackle some of the world's toughest problems. As the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches in 1979, Archbishop Tutu spoke strongly and internationally, pushing for non-violent change and economic sanctions against South Africa. Two years after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, Tutu was chosen to be Archbishop of Cape Town, the highest position in the Anglican Church in South Africa. In 1994, he was appointed as Chairman of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate apartheid-era crimes. His policy of forgiveness and reconciliation has become an international model of conflict resolution, and a trusted method of post-conflict reconstruction.
