World Music: DDT, "Belaya Noch"
It is a brooding vision seen as if in a half-light...A trip through canals, and alleyways, into wax museums and cemeteries, evoking the darker side of the history and culture of the city. What must it be like to love and live in this town?
Here's a somber entry from DDT, Russia's elder statesmen of Rock, who live in St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). "Belaya Noch" translates to "White Night" and is a love/hate song to the city.
"This city doesn’t let you sleep, or live, or sing
Or forget those dreams whose lipstick you haven’t wiped from your cheek.
In this white night,
Your people, your steps are like enemies,
In this naked night,
Your angry words are like a sharp sword."

"How are you there, on the other side, where you are in silence?
My heart feels pain at your return.
This white night waits naked and asks for love.
This naked night, I will disappear in its embrace."
