World Music: Omar Faruk Tekbilek

Banning Eyre interviews Omar Faruk Tekbilek who talks about the relationship between musical and spiritual practice. He sings a Sufi song, accompanying himself on the baglama, and demonstrates the ney (flute) and the ear-splitting zurna. Omar Faruk Tekbilek was born in Adana Turkey and found solace as a prodigy of music at the age of eight. He also studied for the Sufi priesthood, seeing no difference between the state induced by music and the pursuit of the spiritual.
