(France) The seminal Sinto Gypsy Jazz master Django Rheinhardt wrote and recorded "Belleville" (not to be confused with "The Triplets of Belleville!) in the early 1940's. It has since become emblematic of the genre and it's not surprising that Birelli LaGrene has chosen to cover it. Gypsy Jazz is a most likable of genres-- toe-tapping stuff that requires extraordinary precision, speed and on the spot invention. All these things are here in abundance in this hot performance at the Vienna Jazz Festival, where LaGrene gathered his playing buddies to jam out to an enthusiastic crowd.
