World Music: Buika, "La Falsa Moneda"
-Download on iTunes
(Spain) Concha Buika was born María Concepción Balboa Buika on the island of Mallorca, to parents who came to Spain as political exiles (her father was a writer and activist) from Equatorial Guinea. She absorbed the flamenco of Spain along with many of the other musics that were available to her and now emerges as one of the most compelling of singers, possessed of a remarkable voice both warm and raspy. In performance we have seen this singer interacting with her fellow flamenco musicians with fire, but in this video, deprived of her soul-mates, she sings entirely with eyes downcast or closed, concentrating on her own inner emotions; she is not one to court the camera.
