World Music: Sona Mohapatra, "Aaja Ve"
(India) Sona Mohapatra trained as a classical singer, but has made her career fusing pop, Bollywood, funk and rock styles into her music. Her first effort "Sona" was a runaway hit for a singer who had never backed up a film soundtrack. "Aaja Ve" has a bhangra beat, but a firmly Western arrangement that deepens the groove. The message is a flirtatious call for a meeting. But despite its seeming call for a tryst, like many of Mohapatra's songs which take their inspiration from the Sufi repertoire, the lyric can support both secular and religious interpretations. "Aaja Ve" literally means "come over here" and in the video Sona beckons to one and all to "come over here... why hide behind the clouds .... meet me face to face."
