U.S. Scraps Missile Defense Plans

(Al Jazeera English: September 17, 2009) Today U.S. President Barack Obama announced changes in plans to the proposed missile shield in Eastern Europe. The original plan, formulated under the Bush administration, faced fierce opposition from Russia, who viewed the shield as a security threat. Al Jazeera English correspondent Alan Fisher reports from Warsaw, Poland on the mixed reaction in Eastern Europe. Other stories include a suicide bombing in Somalia, a report on the deadly NATO bombing in Afghanistan, and a payout deal for 31,000 people who claim they were poisoned by toxic waste dumped in Ivory Coast in 2006.
