World Music: Sister Fa, "Milyamba"

World Music: Sister Fa, "Milyamba"

(Senegal)

"Fashionable one, you spend your day flitting about--
The hardships of rural life do not affect you.
Because, little sister, you live the easy life.
You go shopping in your car, like a singing bird
While I walk miles to the rice fields
At dawn with my child on my back."

Sister Fa believes that it is the job of the rapper to instruct and point out injustice. In "Milyamba" she contrasts the life of a middle class woman with that of her impoverished counterpart. The video does the same by using the walls of high-rises and billboards to project images of women working and carrying water. The chorus, "Milyamba" is sung in Mandigo, and is based  on a legend where village women sing a song to drive a snake into the sea.
