World Music: Zulya and The Children of the Underground, "Children of the Underground"
(Russia/Australia) The Moscow Underground is special. Like many of the subways of the former Soviet Union, each stop was conceived as a tribute to the nobility of The People. So public transportation becomes a journey from one grand underground space to another, replete with sconces, chandeliers, mosaics and murals. Yet the people who take the trains are not grand at all. Here is a sweet and dreamy song about those travelers, done up in an animation style that summons up a bygone era. Zulya herself was born in the Tatarstan-Udmurtia region of Central Russia, but moving to Australia in 1991 has not obscured her memories or feeling for her heritage.
