World Music: Pistolera, "Cazador"

(U.S.) Immigration is one of the hot topics in the U.S., and it's no secret that it is the Latino demographic that is being targeted. NYC-based Pistolera, a mostly female group fronted by songwriter Sandra Velásquez, tackles the story from the side of the underdog, pointing out inequities and contradictions.  "Cazador" means hunter, and the prey is the immigrant, who takes on the jobs no one else will do, who has a right to a decent life through hard work....and who might  have owned the contested land, but for an historical toss of the dice. The song is pushed along nicely by Maria Elena's accordion, which also grounds the band's sound firmly in Mexico, and the tight rhythm section of Inca Satz on bass and Ani Cordero on drums.
