World Music: Angelo Debarre, "Swing Gitan"
(France) We had such a strong response to our airing of Birelli LaGrène and the Gipsy Jazz Project playing "Les Yeux Noirs" in Vienna, that we decided to bring back another part of the show. In this segment, Lagrène has left the stage and the spotlight is on Angelo Debarre, as he takes on "Swing Gitan." The title literally translates to "Gypsy Swing" and it's a standard of the repertoire. Debarre is very much a product of the Gypsy Jazz lifestyle, and like many of the giants of the genre started playing as a child, surrounded by older musicians, jam sessions and plenty of encouragement. His playing is lyrical, inventive --and always--very very fast!
