World Music: Inti-Illimani, "La Fiesta Eres Tu"
(Chile) Inti Illimani are elder statesmen of Nuevea Canción, a songwriting movement that swept through Latin America in the 1960s as a reaction to the repression of dictatorial governments and the revolutionary fervor that was in the air. Its most famous exponent Victor Jara said, "The authentic revolutionary should be behind the guitar, so that the guitar becomes an instrument that can shoot like a gun." His songs so enraged the government that he was publicly tortured and murdered. Inti-Illimani escaped a similar fate, but went into exile until the fall of the Pinochet government. Now that they are performing on home turf again, their music reflects more of the folk roots of Chile, combined with a gentle sophistication.
