World Music: Zafer Younis, "Bedousim"
(Jordan) "Bedouism" is a rare gem of a video, a collaboration between the old and the new, the traditional and the cutting edge. It's a song from the Badia, the arid, northeast section of Jordan set by D.J. Zafer Younis to a throbbing house beat that provides a propulsive bed for that most basic of Middle eastern sounds - solo voice and rababa. The song and singing are by Jamal Khleif, a Bedouin poet and singer. Add to the mix the animation skills of Abeer Seikaly, who, eschewing current computer generated techniques moved handpainted Bedouin dolls across a chessboard frame by frame.
