World Music: Emeline Michel, "Fo M Ale"
(Haiti) Born in Gonaives, Haiti, Emeline's first experience in music was singing gospel music at the local church. After completing her education, Emeline accepted an opportunity to study at the Detroit Jazz Center and returned to Haiti as a professional musician. She has since become an icon of songwriting in Haiti, and has traveled the world performing her music, which is a combination of compas (the exuberant popular dance music of Haiti), rara (drum driven roots music), and twoubadou (literally derived from the word "troubador" and having an acoustic, lyrical flavor). "Fo M Alé" is an example of this latter, sweeter style.
