World Music: Zap Mama, "Brrlak"
(Belgium) Zap Mama has been around since 1990, which makes them elder statesmen - or should we say elder statespeople, of world music. The band is the creation of Marie Daulnes who lost most of her family during the riots in Congo, and who was, as a result born among the pygmies. Their hocket based singing is the most distinctive element of the Zap Mama sound - that combined with an array of Pan African genres. The group is comprised of Africana and European women, and focuses on an a capella sound, and "Brrrrlak" the video finds the ladies having a blast in the desert.
