World Music: Saharaui Women, "El Juego del Tambor"
(West Sahara) This most unusual video is "the playing of the drum," a vignette from Nubenegra Records. The producers journeyed into the heart of Western Sahara to record the music and document the lives of the Saharauis. Theirs is a little publicized story: In 1966 the United Nations called a referendum, calling upon Spain to grant independence to Western Sahara and its inhabitants. Instead, Spain withdrew from the territory only after ceding it to Morocco and Mauritania. The Saharauis have been fighting for their independence through political and peaceful means ever since. In particular, the courage and organizational prowess of the female Saharaui population in the refugee camps has commanded the respect of feminist organizations worldwide. "The playing of the drum" is certainly not a polished piece of World Pop. It documents a very real ritual dance, capturing the hypnotic rhythm of life in the Saharan desert.
