World Music: Fermin Muguruza, "Big Beñat"
(Spain/Basque) The press release for his CD says "file under Basque Country/World/Latin Dub & Reggae." That pretty much describes this globe and genre-hopping artist, who at the same time is ruggedly and stubbornly Basque. He sings in Euskara, the Basque language, which defines Basque nationality. The nation (a politically controversial term) straddles areas of France and Spain, with a coast on the Bay of Biscay. In "Big Beñat" we see a whole lot of people getting ready to run the "Korika" a yearly marathon that is a gesture of national identity. Muguruza takes this opportunity to rail against globalization as represented by fast food, as he sings about the "Big Beñat." The Beñat is the Basque national sandwich (and it looks mighty good!) and Muguruza compares it to another "big" sandwich... which would YOU rather eat?
