World Music: Fanfare Ciocarlia, "Manea cu Voca"
(Romania) The Balkan Brass traditional is thought to have had its origins in the janissary (military) bands of the Ottoman Turks. Over the years it has been transformed into celebratory music, and the tradition now runs from Serbia up to Romania. This joyous mélange of images comes from the movie "Brass On fire" depicting the trials and travels of the Romanian Brass Band, Fanfare Ciocarlia. From the little village that they call home to the streets of Tokyo and back again, the band makes the same driving music that they would make for weddings and coming of age celebrations. It's catchy stuff.
