World Music: Mary Jane Lamond, "Charles Street Reel"
(Cape Breton) Mary Jane Lamond is a fifth generation Canadian, but her grandparents who lived on Cape Breton - an island off the coast of Nova Scotia - were Gaellic speakers. Lamond grew up listening to them speak the language and hearing traditional songs. Cape Breton is somewhat remote from Nova Scotia, so much of Gaelic culture has been preserved, as if in amber. Lamond has been presenting this culture to audiences internationally, sometimes a capella and stripped back to it roots, and sometimes with highly stylized contemporary musical settings. In this track she is accompanied by Ashley MacIsaac, a noted Cape Breton fiddler.
