World Music: Salif Keita, "Ananamin"
(Mali) Keita is descended from Mandinka royalty, but as he is an albino (a sign of bad luck in his culture) life was lonely and he found solace in music, even though making a living as a musician was forbidden. After fronting bands successfully in Mali and Ivory Coast, he moved to Paris, and there recorded what is considered to be one of the great breakthrough recordings of world music, "Soro." This song, "Ananimin," is from his eighth CD, and tells of love rejected and then regretted. Shot in the striking city of Timbuktu, with its singular architecture, this video is a wonderful pastiche of African faces and images.
